Dominican Sister of Peace Sister Edith Hauser

Sr. Edith Hauser

Dominican Sister of Peace Sister Edith (Mary Louise) Hauser, 93, died on October 30, 2020, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace convent infirmary, in Great Bend, KS.

Sister Edith was born in Saint Leo, Kansas in 1927 to Mary Schnittker and Edward Hauser. One of eight children, she became accustomed to living in community at an early age.

Like her sister Amadea, Edith entered religious life. She became a postulant in 1944, made first profession in 1946 and took final vows in 1952. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Science in Education from St. Mary College in Leavenworth, KS.

For sixty years she ministered as a teacher and principal, often holding both positions at the same time, in Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma. She loved shaping the hearts of her young students and commented in her personal annals that “After teaching 60 years I like to hear good things about my former pupils – their concern for the less fortunate, the professional jobs they hold, their good Christian lives as parents, teachers, doctors, etc. They give their Catholic education as the starting point.”

Sr. Edith served the Congregation as a member of the General Council for four years, and later ministered as sacristan and community volunteer.

In her preaching at the Funeral Mass, Sr. Renee Dreiling remembered Sr. Edith as one who “loved Dominican life and the blending together of study, prayer, preaching and action. After our June retreat,” Sr. Renee said, “I heard her say, ‘Well of course the preaching was great – they are good Dominicans!’”

Sister Edith was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and three sisters.  She is survived by one sister, Angela Scantlin, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

A Vigil of Remembrance was held on November 1 and the Mass of Christian Burial was held on November 2, both at the Dominican Chapel of the Plains at the Great Bend Motherhouse. Sr. Edith was buried at Resurrection Cemetery.
