Dominican Sister of Peace M. Karen Chevrier, OP

Dominican Sister of Peace Karen Chevrier, OP, (95), born in Butte, MT, in 1928, died on October 1, 2023, at Regina Health Care Center in Richfield, OH.

Born to Margaret Kearney and Claude Chevrier, she answered the call to religious life following high school and entered the Dominican Sisters of Houston in 1946. She entered our Community through her Founding Congregation in Akron in 1959, made first profession in 1961 and took her final vows in 1967. She has spent the last 64 years professed.

Sister Karen earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and English from Sacred Heart Dominican College and began her ministry as a teacher in Arizona, Colorado and Ohio. She later was certified in CPE and RCIA, serving as a pastoral minister in several parishes in Arizona and Colorado as well as Saint John the Baptist Parish in Akron.

When Sister Karen left her ministry at Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Colorado, her pastor wrote: "Her life and service reveal the quiet presence she has in her Lord. We will miss her presence and her gifts."

Sr. Mary Noel, OP, validated this in her preaching during the funeral Mass. She noted that, “Karen spent her life seeing various things that needed to be done and not thinking of what she wanted, but quietly and unobtrusively doing what needed to be done. She lived for others and the common good.”

A Vigil of Remembrance Service and Wake were held on October 9, 2023, at the Akron Motherhouse Chapel, in Akron, OH.

Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery immediately followed Mass.

Memorial gifts in Sr. Karen’s memory may be sent to the Dominican Sisters of Peace, Office of Mission Advancement, 2320 Airport Dr. Columbus, OH 43219 or submitted securely at oppeace.org.
