
Dominican Sister of Peace Malya Carusi, OP, (103), of New Haven, CT, died on October 7, 2023, at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH.
Malya was born to Adele Cantore and Joseph Carusi on December 23, 1919. She entered the congregation in 1939 and has been professed for over 84 years.
Sr. Malya earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Saint Mary of the Springs College, now Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, OH.
She taught in schools in Michigan, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. She also ministered in pastoral ministry, as an Aide at Hartley Community for the Elderly, and then became a cosmetologist to serve the retired sisters in Mohun Health Care Center.
In her preaching at the funeral, Sr. Ellen Dunn said, “We know that Sr. Mayla lived a long and faith-filled life that she demonstrated through her ongoing daily "works" — big time gestures from a quiet, humble person.
Malya was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Dolores Rochlus.
A Vigil of Remembrance Service and Wake were held on October 17, 2023, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel, Columbus, OH.
The funeral liturgy followed on October 18, 2023, followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery by Egan Ryan Funeral Home.
