Dominican Sister of Peace Tuyet Ngoc Tran, (74), died on November 21, 2023, at Sansbury Care Canter, St. Catharine, KY.
Tuyet was born to Hau Thi Nguyen and Thien Van Tran on May 26, 1949, in Gia Coc, Hung Yen, Vietnam. She entered the Congregation of Dominican Sisters of Saint Rose of Lima in Vietnam but had to flee the country during Communist upheaval. She eventually made her way to the United States, where she joined our Sisters at St. Catharine in 1986. She had spent the last 34 years professed as a Dominican Sister.
Sr. Tuyet earned an Associate of Arts in Clothing Design from Santa Ana College, CA, and an Associate of Arts in Human Services from Jefferson Community College, Louisville, KY.
She used her knowledge of human services to minister in social work with Lutheran Child and Family Services, Catholic Charity, and more throughout Massachusetts.
While she was dedicated to the people she served, a part of her heart remained in Vietnam. Eventually she went back for a period of three years to do missionary work. During her time in Vietnam, she worked with lepers, the poor, and minorities; fought for suitable drinking water; and taught children English. The Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of the Assumption, Sr. Tuyet’s “home base” in Vietnam, wrote back to the US saying that, “Tuyet’s presence was a dream come true.”
Sr. Tuyet is survived by a sister, brother, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The wake was held at the Sansbury Chapel on Thursday, November 30. The Mass of Christian Burial took place on Friday, December 1, in Magdalen Chapel, with the burial following at St. Catharine Cemetery in Springfield, KY.
Memorial gifts in Sister Tuyet’s memory may be submitted securely at oppeace.org, or sent to the Dominican Sisters of Peace, Office of Mission Advancement, 2320 Airport Dr, Columbus, OH 43219.
