Dominican Sister of Peace Doris Lee Mingus, OP, (83), a native of Louisville, KY, died on March 11 at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, KY.
Doris was born to Elizabeth J. Crawford and Charles Bernard Mingus on October 5, 1940. She entered the Congregation in 1958, made her first profession in 1960 and has lovingly lived those vows for the last 60 years.
Sr. Doris earned a Bachelor of Science in education from Spalding College, Louisville, KY. She ministered for nearly 30 years as a teacher in Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee and held a special place in her heart for the students of Immaculate Heart in Louisville.
In 1990, Sr. Doris answered a call by volunteering to fill the role of Pastoral Minister for Sansbury Care Center. She earned her CPE in Pastoral Care from Central State Hospital and accompanied many sisters on their journey home for over 14 years. After retiring, Sr. Doris served as the receptionist at the St. Catharine Motherhouse, cheerfully greeting visitors and directing phone calls. In her preaching at her funeral, Sr. Janie Keenoy said, “Doris Lee made all feel welcomed and at ease.”
In her letter to the congregation Sr. Patricia Twohill, said: “Sr. Doris was an example of gracious hospitality - whether accommodating a guest for a retreat, making sure they had everything they may need or interacting with her fellow residents and staff at Sansbury Care Center – she was commended for her calming presence.”
Sr. Doris was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Hanshew. She is survived by one brother, Ronnie, and two sisters, Ruth Ann Burke and Rita Hasty, along with several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial took place on Friday, March 15 in the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. Burial followed at the St. Catharine Cemetery.
