Dominican Sister of Peace Mattie Sterner, OP, (92), died on October 9, at the Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH.   

Born Agnes Marie in Somerset, OH, to Mary Finnen and Leo Sterner, she entered the congregation in 1949 and was professed for the last 73 years. 
 
Sr. Mattie earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from St. Mary of the Springs College, Columbus, OH, and a Master of Theology from the University of Dayton, OH. 
 
Sr. Mattie began her 25-year ministry in education, teaching at various levels from grade school to college across Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut. Following that, she dedicated 32 years to leadership roles within the Steubenville Diocese, Cincinnati Archdiocese, and the Diocesan Office in Dayton, OH.  

Eventually returning to Columbus, she became the Director of the Center for Dominican Studies at her alma mater, Ohio Dominican University (formerly St. Mary of the Springs). Even after she retired from active ministry in 2016, Sr. Mattie continued to support the community through service, prayer, and her compassionate presence. 

Although Mattie served in a variety of different roles, she viewed each as a pulpit from which she could preach the Good News. In her letter to the congregation, Sr. Pat Twohill said: “Mattie had a special gift that enabled her to relate to people in ways that were meaningful to them. She enriched the lives of those with whom she ministered and lived.” 

In her preaching at her funeral, Sr. Germaine Conroy credited Sr. Mattie as her role model that led her to Dominican life. “It was Mattie’s example and love for her vocation and the Dominican community that I and many others came to love,” said Sr. Germaine. 

Sister Mattie is proceeded in death by her parents and the “Corporation.”  She is survived by her dear friend, Sr. Gene Poore and extended family. 

The wake was held on Friday, October 18, featuring an office and sharing of memories. The Mass of Resurrection took place on Saturday, October 19. All services were held at the Columbus Motherhouse Chapel, with burial following at St. Joseph Cemetery.
