Teaching Peace to a New Generation

The Dominican Sisters of Peace were "Presente" at the 2025 Ignatian Family Teach-In For Justice.  The gathering hosted by the Ignatian Solidarity Network took place from November 15-17. The event is a dynamic platform that celebrates Catholic Social Teaching and empowers Catholic High School and College students to embrace the practice of prayerful contemplation and action for peace and justice.

The annual gathering brought together about 2,000 individuals who got to learn from various Catholic experts about engaging in the rich Catholic Spiritual Practices and acting out the Catholic Social Teaching. Keynote speakers included Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ of Home-Boy Industries, Christina Leaño of the Laudato Si Movement, and Yunuen Trujillo of L.A. Pico.

As part of the conference, Sisters June Fitzgerald, OP, and Ana Gonzalez, OP, engaged the participants by being present, offering information about our diverse ministries, playing games, and asking students how they hoped to help Pope Leo XIV Build Peace. Several hundred students demonstrated their commitment to building peace by loving God's creation, speaking out for the marginalized, providing educational opportunities, and sharing kindness. These commitments were written on post-it notes and stuck to a cardboard cutout of our new Pope.

The event concluded on Monday, November 17, as students, mentors, and various participants gathered in preparation to meet with their legislative leaders on Capitol Hill. During the final gathering, Sister Ana was invited to address the participants at the closing rally in preparation for the advocacy for human migration and ecological policies.

The annual Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice began in 1997 as a way to create awareness of Catholic contemplation and action for peace and justice.

The Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice began in 1997 and is the precursor to the Ignatian Solidarity Network, founded in 2004 to sustain the faith-oriented action for social justice galvanized among the Jesuit network and the larger Church through the Teach-In. Over its twenty-plus-year history, the Ignatian Solidarity Network has grown to engage people of all ages, particularly young people, in faith-based social justice programs and campaigns throughout the year. These programs educate, form, network, and mobilize individuals and institutions to build a more just world where people and the planet flourish."

  1. Sisters June and Ana,
What an interesting and creative way to emphasize and engage students in faith based social teachings of the Catholic Church. I’ll bet the students loved it.
