Don’t Let The Sun Go Down While You Are Still Angry

“And don’t sin by letting anger control you. Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.”

Ephesians in 4:26-27

Hello, my name is Anne and I was addicted to Angry Birds. Yes, I played and won the original iPhone game – that hilariously funny collection of avian aviators who swoop down to eliminate the evil green pigs. The game is so uber popular, it spawned numerous versions, and boasts 263 million monthly users. But after I succeeded in the final challenge, defeating the King of the Pigs who stole the eggs, I rested on my laurels and hung up my slingshot. Continue reading →

Accommodating Religious Freedom and Civil Rights

“Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his/her religion or belief and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his/her religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.”

– Universal Declaration of Human Rights
United Nations

The last few weeks have provided a civics lesson on balancing civil rights and religious freedom. As with any hot button issue, passion often clouded respectful dialogue and mutual effort at accommodation of divergent positions. I felt was most timely for this week, so with her permission I share it with you. Continue reading →

I realize writing a blog is about sharing something of importance in the life of the writer, and it’s also about getting folks to read and stay on your website. But today I am breaking the rules of blogging by sending you to the Christian Peacemaker Teams’ website to read a blog from one of their members who recently spent time in Iraqi Kurdistan. With our own Dominican Sisters and Brothers suffering from similar circumstances in Iraq, we are called to remain mindful of the harsh realities others in our world are facing, and to pray and act on their behalf. Continue reading →

Luke’s Beatitudes: Blessings and Woes

Blog by Sr. Janet Schlichting, OP

Dorothy Day, great pioneer of the Catholic Worker movement, was once accosted by a fellow Catholic who was of the opinion that Day’s radical stance of living for and with the poor was a bit over the top. Day replied to him, “Go home and read the four gospels. Then we can talk.”

Can we talk frankly about the demands of the Beatitudes and Woes as presented this week in Luke 6:20-30?

First we have to take the nice music away – you know, the kind that makes the beatitudes feel smooth and lovely. Then we have to get out our brushes and brooms and whisk away the glitter, and then question the notion that these words are sweet and silky to “taste and see.” Quite frankly, Luke’s beatitudes are harder to hear and harder to chew than those in Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount. Continue reading →
