An Attitude of Gratitude

A few years before she died, my sister Judy became a great fan of the Oprah Winfrey Show. She taped episodes during the week and then watched them on weekends. One episode in particular caught her attention and she followed the recommendation to start an “I am Grateful” journal. The expectation was that every day she would write down the ten things she was grateful for that day.

After her death, I had to take charge of her house and taking care of her personal items. Among those were her journals, and so I got to read about all of the things she was grateful for each day. Some days it was easy to tell she found it hard to think of new things. Two of her most consistent entries were “I am grateful that I got out of bed today.” and “I am grateful the pain is not so bad,” but there was always gratitude expressed for her co-workers, her family, her home, her cat, her work, her faith.

The last entry in her last journal:
I am grateful.
I am grateful.
I am grateful.
I am grateful.
I am grateful.
I am grateful.
I am grateful.
I am grateful.
I am grateful.
I am grateful.

What would your journal look like? An attitude of gratitude is not just something for Thanksgiving day. It is a way of living. May we all be able to live lives of faithful gratitude and praise God each and every day.
