The Bike on the Corner

Every evening, a young man comes home from his day’s events, parks his bike and chains it to the stop sign on the corner across from our Peace Center in New Orleans. Every morning when we are at prayers, we can see that the bike is still there. Nothing too unusual one might say; except that there have been a rash of bicycle thefts in the neighborhood. So, what is so special about this one bike that no one seems to prize it as they do others? Maybe there is some secret protector watching over it? Continue reading →

Like a Boss: The Ancient Redwoods and The Incarnation

OK, so I have never actually used the phrase “Like a Boss” in my speech (and don’t really like some of what I have read about the use of the phrase), but I have heard it used by younger folks, and it occurred to me that maybe in the positive sense of its meaning, acting in an awesome way, it could stretch to include the giant redwoods. Continue reading →

3 Things I Want for Christmas

I am part of a group who agreed to a gift giving plan this Christmas in which we suggest to each other three things we would like for Christmas. I suspect you may have encountered this approach to Christmas gift giving yourself.

It’s not that I don’t want gifts! But it is hard to make suggestions, it feels funny and oddly uncomfortable. I’m having a hard time naming my three things because I keep thinking of really BIG things like an end to the war in Syria, a ban on assault weapons, or that Donald Trump would drop out of the presidential race. Continue reading →
