We have already past the midway point through Advent, and last Saturday our house community decorated our home for Christmas, finishing in time to get ready for the 4pm Third Sunday of Advent Liturgy, traditionally called Gaudete Sunday. The pink candle on our Advent wreathe was lit, the celebrant adorned the penitential purple with a pink stole, and we were greeted with phrases: “Shout for joy…sing joyfully…be glad and exult with all your heart! …Cry out with joy and gladness…. Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say Rejoice,” and we prayed: “O God…your people faithfully await the feast of the Lord’s Nativity; enable us to attain the joys of so great a salvation and to celebrate them always with solemn worship and glad rejoicing.” Continue reading →

Advent: Waiting in Expectant Hope

In the chapel of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, there is a large Advent wreath on a table draped in purple. In the center of the wreath is a beautiful statute of Mary kneeling, with her head slightly bowed. In front of her, the object of her gentle gaze is a small bible, opened to Mary’s song of praise to God (the Magnificat) in the first chapter of Luke. I began to think of the months and weeks that Mary waited for this miraculous birth to unfold. I can imagine that in her waiting, Mary poured out her fears, her doubts, her joys – her very soul before God. She becomes so filled with hope and joy in her waiting that she declares, “My being proclaims the goodness of God; and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” This scene became a powerful reminder, to me, of the grace that can fill our own journey of “waiting” for God. Continue reading →

Dominican Sisters of Peace Ministered with Chimbote Martyrs

chimbote-groupCHIMBOTE, PERU – Three priests who were martyred during an attempt by guerrillas to overthrow the government of Peru in 1991 were officially honored by the Diocese of Chimbote from December 4 through 6. The climax of the celebration was the beatification Mass in the presence of more than 30,000 faithful, including Dominican Sisters of Peace Thoma Swanson, Susan Leslie, Manuela Crisologo Gonzalez and Gemma Doll.

Srs. Manuela Crisologo Gonzalez and Susan Leslie are missionaries in Chimbote and were members of the Chimbote diocesan social action delegation, which planned some of the events leading to the beatification. Continue reading →
