NEW HAVEN, CT – On Saturday, February 20, 2016, Phuong Thuy Vu was welcomed as a candidate with the Dominican Sisters of Peace at a ceremony held at Albertus Magnus College in St. Catherine of Siena Chapel. Sr. Patricia Twohill, OP, Prioress, opened the chapel door for Phuong and welcomed her in the name of the congregation. Sr. Carole Hermann, OP, who will accompany Phuong as her local formation minister, presented her with a lit candle as a reminder that religious life is one way of responding to the baptismal call to holiness.
Phuong has a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology and has been working in customer service and information technology for AT&T in Dallas, TX. Phuong is a native of Vietnam and immigrated to the United States with her parents and siblings in 1989. She is a naturalized citizen.
“Today we welcome Phuong as a candidate,” Sr. Pat Twohill, Prioress, said. “Her fidelity to God’s call inspires us and invites our own recommitment to Dominican life and mission.”
“Through the experiences of my life, especially the circumstances of our coming to the United States, I really learned how loved I am by God,” Phuong said. “I want to respond to that love through answering the call to religious life.”
Phuong first came into contact with the congregation through Dominican Sister of Peace Sr. Binh Nguyen, OP, when Sr. Binh spoke at Mother of Perpetual Help Parish, Garland, TX. Phuong is active in the Parish as a catechist and prayer group member.
“During this Year of Mercy we are invited to open the door and see Jesus, the Face of God’s mercy,” said Sr. June Fitzgerald, OP, Vocation Minister. “Today we open the door of our congregation to Phuong and welcome her into the Dominican Family.”
Dominican Sister of Peace Sr. Cathy Arnold, OP, Formation Minister, presided at the prayer service. Sisters from the area, including Mission Group East, the local community and the Ministry of Welcome Team, (Sr. June Fitzgerald, OP, and Pat Dual, OP), participated in the welcoming ceremony. Also in attendance were: Dr. Julia McNamara, President of Albertus Magnus College; Sr. Maggie Mkenda, MM, member of the Eld Street community; Phuong’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Luong and Nga Vu; as well as siblings Oanh and Ha Vu from Texas. Phuong’s sister and brother-in-law, Loan and Thach Tran and their three children also attended.
