Ecological Conversation Resolution

cropped-871efdf7861ddc4b47c116447ac2accb_400x400.pngThe Sisters of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, Region 6, of which Dominican Sisters of Peace is a part of and includes Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee, passed a resolution calling for ecological conversion, responding to the cry of Earth and the cry of the poor in Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. The present condition of these States calls us to transform our region from rust belt industry, mining, fracking, and agriculture that is dependent on high chemical usage to an area that enhances our cultural richness, protects water and soil quality, and nurtures a healthy community, especially for the poorest among us. As Pope Frances says in Laudato Si’ (LS #139) our environmental crisis is not separate from our social crises.

We commit to continuing dialogue and advocacy in nurturing ecological conversion in both our individual and collective lives.

I used to think religious life was only a life of praying and serving people and certainly didn’t involve science.  But then, I accepted a job in the scientific research field as a research assistant three months before I entered religious life in 2000. “Folks have called Carol Raivert Trainer, member of Veterans for Peace, unpatriotic for her anti-war stance.  Some parents move their children away from her organization table at community events, worried that her progressive stance can be caught like some airborne virus without a cure.  ‘Get a job!, a handful of dissenters say to the retiree who has always had one.  ‘Dirty hippie,’ others mutter in attempts to justify their disdain.”                                                       COURIER –JOURNAL   April 24, 2016

On April 14, I went behind the razor wire at the Ohio Reformatory for Women to be the hands and feet of Christ…and to deliver 4,000 dozen cookies. It’s a big task but one that God makes possible twice a year in prisons across the country with faithful servants and outstanding community support. I’m sure the Kairos Prison ministry is one of many that bring Christ to the incarcerated, but since it’s my experience, I will share that. Continue reading →
