Reflections on the 2016 School of the Americas Watch in Nogales

This year, the 2016 School of the Americas Watch moved from Fort Benning to the U.S.-Mexico border in Nogales. Six Dominican Sisters of Peace and Associates  participated in the Convergence at the Border that took place on October 7-10. The change of location was an effort to bring “awareness to the militarization of the border, the criminalization of migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and people of color.” (SOA Website). The weekend event included rallies, workshops, prayer services, actions and gatherings in both Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Mexico.  Continue reading →

Protect People, Protect Land: #NoDAPL

If you are a Facebook or Twitter user, you may have noticed #NoDAPL is trending as many are standing in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and other protesters in North Dakota to block the Dakota Access Pipeline. The nearly 1,200 mile pipeline is being built by a Texas-based energy company and would span from North Dakota through South Dakota and Iowa to Illinois. According to an article by Justin Worland of TIME, this pipeline would transport up to 570,000 barrels of crude oil every day. Continue reading →
