What’s the song God is singing in you?

Finding Peace this Holiday Season

Every Advent, it seems, I’m gifted with a song – new or familiar – that provides the background music for my journey through the season. The promise and eager anticipation of Advent have always stirred my soul, and the songs of these weeks often reflect those feelings. But this year feels different. This time, Advent has felt for me like a time of doubt, upset, and confusion, reflecting the mood of our country, no matter on which side of the political fence one sits.

This Advent, many of the songs I’ve treasured in the past seem to have lost their meaning. I find myself aware of the lack of peace in my heart as in the hearts of so many others – and the experience makes me long for peace even more. So where, I wondered, would I find music to give meaning to an Advent like this?

The answer came in the song, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” by Casting Crowns. It’s a haunting melody that gives voice to my doubts while reminding me that peace on Earth is indeed the promise we all share…

In despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on earth I said
For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to (all)

Is that feeling as familiar to you as it is to me? And then, the promise…bells-1028706_1280

Then rang the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor does (God) sleep
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to (all)

So what’s the song that God is singing in you this Advent season? Can you hear the peal of the bells in your heart, reminding you that God’s promise of peace on Earth is not just for the good days?

  1. You keep singing this song with the example of your life in peace and with courage. Thanks sooo much! Margaret Ormond

  2. Sister Arleen: Thank you not only for the hopeful notes and lyrics from the ashes of despair, also for the chance to reflect on the wrong and right that is also a part of me. Maybe a bell of clarity will come ringing through the process and the night. Joyous Noel

  3. AMEN, Sister! Rachel and I just came from an Islam Meeting. The “theme” of all the talks from various faith and civil community leaders was just that — all on this together supporting and calling on God, Allah, Jesus to bring us Peace and unity during this post-election trauma.

  4. Thanks, Arleen for the reminder! A song, or instrumental music can really speak to my soul! And I do recall that old carol you quoted… powerful words, and reminder that God is in charge!

    Peace!

    Pat
