Yesterday we celebrated the Feast of Epiphany: the Magi, captivated by an extraordinary shining star, studied it, and then followed its lead until they found the Christ child revealed to them as God-with-us. With gladness they worshiped and offered their most precious gifts. As I reflected on this familiar story, I thought of all the “shining stars” of my life that led me to an “epiphany” or revelation of God-with-me, bringing me to my knees (spiritually, if not physically) in joy, gratitude, adoration, and self-giving. Continue reading →

Endings and Beginnings

What personal rituals do you have for the ending and the beginning of a new year? Do you throw things out which you are no longer using, or begin new projects or new resolutions with the start of a new year? Is this time of year just like every other time of year for you?

One of the practices that I have retained from my novitiate experience is taking time for a reflection day, looking back over the past year and looking ahead to hopes and dreams I have. I find it helpful to ponder where I’ve been, where I gave my energy during the past year, and where I hope to grow, especially in regard to my relationships with others. Continue reading →

It’s the beginning of a new year and a chance to make new New Year’s resolutions. I always like to look over the past year and see how I might do things differently. Of course, I need to eat fewer calories and walk more steps… spend less time watching NCIS (or Pure Genius, Code Black, etc!) and more time learning Spanish. Continue reading →

Sr. Doreen Newton

newton-doreenDominican Sister of Peace Doreen Newton, OP, (94) died at the Akron Motherhouse (OH) on December 29, 2016.

Sr. Doreen was one of five children born to Arthur and Elsie Peins Newton in Akron, OH. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron, now Dominican Sisters of Peace, on January 6, 1944, and made religious profession on August 26, 1945. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from St. John College in Cleveland in 1956. Continue reading →

Become a Point of Peace

Happy Feast Day since January 1 is the World Day of Peace and we are Dominican Sisters of Peace!

My favorite prayer for our community is that God help each of us become points of peace wherever we are and in whatever situation we find ourselves. It came to me when sitting by a small lake watching a child throwing pebbles into the water. Even the smallest one set up an ever expanding circle of ripples. Thus my prayer is that even the smallest action or word of ours brings peace. Continue reading →
