Wading into the Water
The first time I heard the song Wade in the Water, I was attending Sunday services with a friend of mine at her church in Washington, DC. Having grown up in the Catholic Church, this song was not one I was familiar with. However, after a few measures – the beat took over my feet, hands and my entire body as we all began moving to the music. I still remember the heat of the church, the gardenia corsage the usher had pinned to my blouse, and a little boy dancing in the aisle. It is a song that has a deep visceral memory for me and it is one that soothes my soul when I feel the familiar beat and hear the tune swelling up to the rafters. It became a song that lapped against my life as I discerned God’s call to this life.
The refrain invites us to step out in faith and to trust Jesus that he will guide and save us.
Wade in the water
Wade in the water, children
Wade in the water
God’s gonna trouble the water…
I invite you to take a short three minute prayer break to listen to the song, sung by Kim & Reggie Harris – good friends and supporters of our Dominican Retreat and Conference Center in Niskayuna, NY. They are faith-filled, dynamic people who share their passion for music and for spreading the Good News wherever they go.
As you listen to the song, reflect on these questions:
- When did God ask you to wade in the water? To step out in faith?
- Did you? Or did you hold back? What would you do now?
Spend a few moments reflecting on that experience, savoring it and asking God to continue to give you the courage and trust to step out in faith. Then, thank God and ask for the insight to understand how God may be calling you to something more today. Whatever it is, God will be there to guide you and to catch you if you fall.
Who knows, you may be stepping out on the greatest adventure of your life.
