Dominican Sister of Peace Barbara Jean Pelak (66) died October 15, 2016 at Lourdes Health Care Center in Waterford, MI.

Sister Barbara Jean was born February 18, 1950 to John and Angeline Bierzynski  Pelak in Detroit, MI.  She entered the Dominican Sisters of Oxford (now the Dominican Sisters of Peace) in 1974. She earned a Bachelor of Science in General Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources from Oakland University in Rochester, MI and certification in Achievement for Supervisor Training from the Archdiocese of Detroit. Continue reading →

Dominican Sister of Peace Lelia Horkans (88) died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH on October 10, 2016. She was born in 1928 in Philadelphia, PA. Her family later moved to Manhattan, where she attended St. Vincent Ferrer Elementary School and met the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs.

She continued her education and religious formation with the Sisters as a boarding student at Mary Immaculate School in Ossining, NY. In 1946, following her high school graduation, she entered the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Continue reading →

Dominican Sister of Peace Mary Bernadette Deeney, OP (91), a native of Lowell, Massachusetts, died on September 29, 2016, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky.

A Dominican for 64 years, Sr. Bernadette earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Siena College (Memphis, TN).  She ministered as a teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes (Queens Village, NY); St. Mary (Williamstown, NJ); St. Michael (Orland Park, IL); St. Joseph (Mattoon, IL); SS Simon and Jude (Brooklyn, NY); and Rosary Academy (Watertown, MA).  When she left teaching, she ministered as a nurses’ aide and plant administrator at Maristhill Nursing Home in Waltham, MA.  Later, she served as plant manager at both ElderServe and Rosary Manor in Watertown, MA.  In 1999, Sr. Bernadette provided community service at Rosary Manor in Watertown, MA.  Continue reading →

Dominican Sister of Peace Helen Walter (97) died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH on August 27, 2016. She was born in 1918 in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1936 she entered the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the College of St. Mary of the Springs, now Ohio Dominican University, and a Master of Science in Administration from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA . Continue reading →
