She was born in Worcester, MA, and served in the United States Navy prior to entering the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia (Nashville, TN) in 1950. Sr. M. Hilary Simpson, OP

Simpson_MHilaryDominican Sister of Peace Mary Hilary Simpson, OP (78), died on February 15, 2016, at North Oaks Medical Center (Hammond, LA). Her parents were Siguard Edgar Simpson, Jr. and Beatrice Vitrano Simpson. Sr. Hilary was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Siguard E. Simpson, III.

In 1955, Sr. Mary Hilary entered the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary, (New Orleans, LA) now the Dominican Sisters of Peace. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Loyola University (New Orleans, LA) and a Master of Science in Music Education and Instrumental Music from Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA). Continue reading →

Beck-FidelisDominican Sister of Peace Mary Fidelis Beck, OP (97), died January 24, 2016, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse in Oxford, MI. She was born November 8, 1918, in Brookside, PA, to Paul and Jeanne Guillaume and named Louise Pauline Beck. Sr. Dorothy Margaret Dawes, OP

Dawes-DorothyDominican Sisters of Peace Dorothy Margaret Dawes, OP (85), died on January 23, 2016, at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center (New Orleans, LA). Born August 29, 1930, in Chenal, LA, she was the daughter of Richard and Addie Marie (McKay) Dawes.

In 1948 she entered the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary’s, New Orleans, (now the Dominican Sisters of Peace). Sr. Dorothy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from St. Mary’s Dominican College (New Orleans, LA) and a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry/ Biology from Institutum Divi Thomae (Cincinnati, OH). She also earned a Master of Arts degree in Biblical Language and Literature from St. Louis University (St. Louis, MO). Known as a master teacher, she taught at St. Mary’s Dominican High School and St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans. Later she served as adjunct professor and campus minister in Hammond, Lafayette and Thibodaux, LA, and Orlando, FL. She also served as vocation minister, archivist and historian for her congregation. Continue reading →
