POSITION SUMMARY:  To lead the Springs Learning Center team in developing, coordinating and maintaining the Adult English as a Second Language Literacy, Citizenship and Basic Literacy Programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Manage Learning Center Operations

  • Be the public face of the Springs Learning Center
  • Hire and direct employees and coordinate volunteers/tutors
  • Develop and operate within an annual budget
  • Develop annual calendar for tutors and learners (language appropriate)
  • Assess and manage physical conditions and improvement of the Center
  • Provide annual reports to the Dominican Sisters of Peace Leadership Team
  • Advertise the Center within the civic community and area churches, including requests for tutors
  • Maintain communication with local libraries in various towns
  • Develop and maintain a brochure for the Center including a photo library
  • Oversee the Filemaker Computer Program with statistical information of learnings and tutors
  • Oversee the development and updating of the strategic plan with the Advisory Council and staff

Adult Learner Programs

  • Train volunteer tutors who are interested in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and/or Citizenship Preparation Classes
  • Provide intake sessions for all prospective learners including a language ability assessment
  • Assess prospective learners for level placement
  • Pair tutors and leaners
  • Create a learners’ conversation class

Tutor Training

  • Provide regular tutor training workshops for new tutors
  • Provide a monthly Tutor Tip newsletter with updates and suggestions
  • Complete annual statistical report for ProLiteracy Organization
  • Plan and implement tutor in-service days for ESL tutors on topics that will improve teaching skills; recruit speakers for presentations from local service programs, libraries, etc.
  • Maintain weekly contact with all tutors regarding the progress of learners

Advisory Council

  • Recruit and interview prospective candidates for council membership
  • Work with the Advisory Council for immediate and long-term strategic planning of program improvement, budgeting, marketing, funding, etc.
  • Serve as an ex-officio member
  • Conduct orientation sessions for new Advisory Council members
  • Maintain and revise council guidelines as needed
  • Work with the chairperson on agendas and items for meetings

Development

  • Seek ways to develop funding resources (e.g. grants, appeals, etc.)
  • Acknowledge all funds received
  • Maintain contact with the Dominican Sisters of Peace’s grant writer in Columbus Ohio
  • Complete all grant evaluation reports as necessary

Professional Workshops and Meetings

  • Attend and participate in professional conventions, workshop, and meetings
  • Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of adult literacy

Other Expectations

  • Continually strive to achieve the SLC mission, vision, and purpose
  • Arrange for celebrations such as volunteer appreciations, anniversaries, Christmas, closing liturgy, and International Peace Supper

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field (Master’s Degree preferred)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing (working knowledge of Spanish is preferred)
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse social, economic, and racial backgrounds
  • A strong work ethic and a desire to work as a supportive team member
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Computer proficiency (e.g. Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.)

POSITION SUMMARY: To work as a housekeeper and team member of the Maintenance and housekeeping department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Major Activity:
Housekeeping and Laundry responsibilities at the Motherhouse and Martin dePorres, which include the following:

  • Cleans window treatments, including removal and replacements.
  • Cleans lobbies, lounges, restroom, corridors and stairways.
  • Wash windows, wall, chalk/dry erase boards and trashcans.
  • Sweep, rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies.
  • Dust furniture, shelving, and other fixtures.
  • Washes walls, ceiling, and woodwork.
  • Washes windows, doors, and sills.
  • Empties wastebaskets, removes trash, and recycling from building.
  • Transports trash, waste, and recyclables to disposal area.
  • Replenishes bathrooms supplies.
  • Clean, sanitize equipment, burnishes, extractors, auto scrubbers and wet/dry vacuums.
  • Assist in snow removal at entryways.
  • Cleanup and disposal of biological waste in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Understands and complies with the following safety rules in the work place.
  • Work as a team player with other housekeeping and maintenance staff.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma
Requirements: Must be able to work a flexible schedule beyond normal work hours including weekends and holidays.

Position Description
 Job Title – Driver /Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing transportation to assigned locations, and providing assistance in activities of daily living.  The individual effectively facilitate transportation needs.    While respecting resident rights to privacy and confidentiality, the individual provides a supportive and accommodating environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

(1) Major Activity: Transports residents to assigned destinations.

  • drives Sisters to doctors’ appointment, clinics and hospitals as assigned by Transportation Coordinator
  • carefully assists Sisters in and out of transportation vehicle
  • assists with ADL’S at the appointment
  • obtains and notes any special orders provided by the practitioner during the appointment and submits any documents to the Wellness Nurse
  • solicits help from volunteer drivers when appropriate
  • maintains vehicle in good condition and informs Fleet Manager of any mechanical or other vehicle malfunctions.

(2) Major Activity:

  • keeps environmental safety in mind (e.g. equipment put away in safe place,   objects off floor, dry floor, ect.)
  • alerts Wellness Nurse of any impairment of special needs    residents
  • follows proper emergency procedures in the event an emergency occurs.

(3) Major Activity:      Assists in other duties as assigned.

  • Obtains supplies for Administrative Office area
  • Collects batteries for recycling
  • Maintain database of doctors’ offices
  • Maintain records of appointments of Sisters
  • Fill in for receptionist
  • Assists in pick-ups (i.e. medicines, equipment)
  • Provides and accompanies Sisters on shopping trips
  • Assist Wellness center in delivery of food trays to sick Sisters

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma; (1) course in geriatrics or gerontological principles preferred

Experience: (6) months experience with transportation of elder population preferred; (1) year experience in independent living facility preferred.

Requirements: Possess a valid Ohio driver’s license, excellent driving record as evaluated by insurance company; work flexible schedule with occasional weekends and evenings.

KNOWLEDGE: gerontological concepts and geriatric care preferred; universal precautions; emergency procedures; policies and procedures of St. Mary of the Springs(upon employment); liability in the area of resident abuse and neglect; traffic regulations; city of Columbus area locations preferred.

SKILLS: excellent interpersonal skills including empathetic and patient communication with residents; good listening skills; basic computer skills, operation of transportation vehicle(van or car); read and follow directions on a map.

ABILITY: prioritize tasks; follow instructions; complete routine tasks without close supervision; relay pertinent information to appropriate Residence employees and practitioners; observe and evaluate non‑verbal behaviors; relate to depressed or confused resident calmly and sympathetically; speak slowly and clearly. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in well‑lighted/ventilated areas throughout the Dominican Residence and in transportation vehicles; subject to frequent interruptions; involved with resident, employees ,doctors, nurses, and practitioners; subject to  exposure from infectious waste, disease, including exposure to AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses; works in various locations while transporting residents to appointments and events. May work other positions temporarily.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift at least fifty (50) pounds alone or the equivalent of one hundred pounds utilizing a two person lift; required to lift , push, pull, and move equipment throughout the day; able to move intermittently throughout the work day including sitting, standing, bending and lifting; speak English in an understandable manner; cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position; possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met;  have good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.

SCOPE OF POSITION: Directly reports to Resident Services Manager; functional supervision by Wellness Nurse.
