I can remember an Ash Wednesday Mass about 16 years ago. We had placed the Ashes for Blessing and Distribution in the Sanctuary. The Lenten focus area had been carefully prepared with the Book of the Gospels, the Crown of Thorns and a bowl of ashes to remind us of our need for prayer and repentance. Today we ponder the life, words, actions and death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, on this national holiday which recognizes his greatness. We are reminded yet again of the details of his faith, courage and prophetic life. He was great and he was famous as well. Most of the world knows him as non-violent civil and human rights activist who championed the rights of African Americans and all people of color, led the Poor People’s Campaign and joined the Anti-Vietnam War Movement. My friend began pouring out her heart-wrenching experience of her marriage breaking apart, and as I listened, I was silently praying, “God, please help her, help us. God, where are you?” Just then, a bright red cardinal lit upon the nearby rooftop and began singing what clearly sounded like, “Right here! Right here!” It was as if God rode in on the wings of a bird song to remind me to simply be present to my friend and pay attention without anxiety, because God was there to help us.
