Vocations Blog

Every vocation story begins with a call – a call to share your gifts with others who want to make a difference in the world. If you believe that you’ve heard God’s call, and you want to write your own story with the Dominican Sisters of Peace, contact us to begin a conversation.

Dominican Sisters of Peace Choose Not to go to War

…not because we did not want to visit War, WV, but rather, we simply ran out of time. On Sunday, Srs. June Fitzgerald, Pat Dual, and I drove to Powhatan, WV, to visit Dominican Sister of Peace Binh Nguyen, OP, who ministers in McDowell County, WV, in four parishes that share one priest. We wanted to see what kind of work she does and to see what the possibilities are for some of the women who are discerning with us to spend a week or two in ministry with her. Continue reading →

Who is My Neighbor?

Blog by Sr. June Fitzgerald, OP
Blog by Sr. June Fitzgerald, OP

In the Gospel of Luke 10:29, at the beginning of the story of the Good Samaritan, we hear the question posed to Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus then tells the now familiar story of reaching out to help a stranger in need. We know that our neighbor includes all peoples no matter how far or near they live. Yet, sometimes I don’t reflect this in my life, my choices, and my words.

When Pope Francis visited our country last month, he focused a good bit on care for each other, care for the earth, and the common good. I felt challenged to look at how I live and if I am living the Gospel imperative to care for and love each other or if I just pay it lip service. Francis emphasized that the family is the microcosm of this care and love that I/we are called to live. So, I ask you, “Who is your family?” I ask myself, “Who is my family?” Continue reading →

Feeling nudged by God? How does it make you feel?

I recently watched Frozen the movie. I could see myself as Elsa with Anna as God.

Gift…
Elsa, the main character in the movie, wasn’t a typical princess. She was born with magical powers. We all are born unique. “You formed my inmost being.” (Psalm 139:13a) Continue reading →

Is Listening and Being Present Enough?

Blog by Associate Mary Ellen George, OPA
Blog by Associate Mary Ellen George, OPA

As an introvert, I often wonder and agonize over whether being a listener and being present to others is enough. Formulating and speaking my thoughts does not come easy for me and my natural bent is to listen, hopefully, assuring the other person that they are heard. Perhaps being a lifelong hearing impaired person has encouraged me to listen deeply. Of course, there are blessings to not being able to hear too and I am certainly guilty of turning my hearing aids off to enjoy moments of silence. Continue reading →

Journeying with God in Kentucky

Pat Dual
Blog by Sr. Pat Dual, OP

Last weekend several women traveled to the rolling hills of Kentucky to spend a few days with the Dominican Sisters of Peace at the St. Catharine Motherhouse. They came from different states – Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia – but they came with the same purpose. They came in response to the stirring in their hearts. They came sensing that God was inviting them to consider a different path, one of service and purpose. They came with open hearts and minds, ready to pray, share and reflect with the Sisters and with each other about this mysterious call of God.

Our participants for the Come and See weekend were warmly welcomed and enjoyed not only the Motherhouse community and each other, they also enjoyed a tour of St. Catharine College, a sponsored ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, along with a personal tour of the Abbey of Gethsemani – home of the Trappist Monks in Kentucky. One of the highlights of the visit to Gethsemani was our group singing Salve Regina in the main chapel of the monastery. The acoustics were wonderful and it was a Spirit-filled moment for each of us. Continue reading →
