Dominican Sister of Peace Peggy Duggan, OP, a native of Holbrook, MA, died on April 27, 2015, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, KY. Sr. Peggy is survived by her brothers Wilfred and John, her sister Mary and several nieces and nephews. A Dominican for 52 years, Sr. Peggy earned a nursing degree from St. Elizabeth Hospital (Brighton, MA); a BS degree in Nursing from Catherine Spalding College (Louisville, KY) and a Master's in Midwifery from Frontier Nursing Service/Mary Breckinridge Hospital (Hyden, KY). Over her lifetime, she ministered as a nurse in a variety of capacities in hospitals in Kentucky, Nebraska and Massachusetts. Since 1984, Sr. Peggy ministered as a midwife and certified nurse at Su Clinica Familiar, Harlingen, TX. As a midwife, Peggy's patients came first and she was very energetic and firm when she advocated for their care. Sometimes she took care of patients that were facing difficult births and Peggy was very present and professional in the way she accompanied the women who were about to give birth. She took care of high risk patients and delivered babies in difficult situations. When reflecting on the role of the midwife, Peggy said, "My attitude is one of gratitude for being able and privileged to participate in this awesome event." Her closest friends in Harlingen, TX, wrote to us to express their sadness upon hearing of her passing. If the funeral was held in Texas, hundreds of people would attend. Martha E. Burk, CNM, MSN, said, "We knew each other and had the joy of working together for 30 years. Throughout that time she was completely immersed in her mission, which was to care for and serve the poor. In good times and bad times, God was always right in the middle of everything. Her ministry was focused on the spiritual, as well as the physical, well being of patients, co-workers and friends." Another friend, Margaret Smith wrote: "My nurse-midwifery career would not have been successful if not for the guidance, direction and support she provided. In addition, my personal life would not have been the same without my friend Sr. Peggy to laugh with, share meals with, attend continuing education together and to give me a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen in times of need. Sr. Peggy was a friend to me in every way, she will not be forgotten.  I am blessed to have been able to call her my friend." Most people do not know that Sr. Peggy loved to go fishing and she was deeply influenced by Sr. Shiela Pendergast, OP, who directed her in a life-changing retreat. For 50 years Paschala Noone, OP, was her mentor, inspiration and faithful friend in times of trouble. Services were held on May 6 and 7 at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel, and burial followed at the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
