As part of our educational ministry, the Dominican Sisters of Peace established two learning centers to respond to the literacy needs of underserved adult learners. These centers offer adult learners a place where they can become confident in reading, writing and math skills, with a special emphasis on English as a Second Language (ESL) while also learning to be independent. Check out the videos about these learning centers below.
Dominican Learning Center (14 minutes) — In 1994, the Dominican Sisters started a literacy center to work with the poor, the marginalized, and to help adults obtain their GED. Located in Columbus, Ohio, this center is a place where adults can learn to read and write and acquire math and computer skills. Immigrants can also learn to read, write, and converse in English as well as prepare for citizenship tests and employment opportunities.
Siena Learning Center (19 minutes) – Siena Learning Center (New Britain, CT) serves adult learners from largely Spanish and Polish-speaking populations, along with students from many countries around the world. This holistic literacy program has a special emphasis on ESL speaking, reading, and writing skills.
The Center was featured in Crossroads, the video magazine of the Archdiocese of Hartford.
The Springs Learning Center (12 minutes) – The Springs Learning Center in New Haven, CT, provides a holistic literacy program for underserved adult learners, with a special emphasis on English as a Second Language (ESL).
