"They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.  Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore." - Micah 4:3-4

One of the most enjoyable events of Derby Week is the Pegasus Parade, and again this year I joined thousands who watched the colorful costumes, balloons and marching bands.  Mid way into the parade, "Breaking News" flashed on the screen the announcement that two 15 year-olds had shot two other teenagers near the parade route.  This event seems to be the "new normal" in Louisville and around the country.  Incidents of gun violence and deaths are increasing rapidly this year. Concerned groups and individuals continue to think of creative ways to respond to the epidemic of gun violence.  Among those organizations, MOMS Demand Action for Gunsense in America and Sowers of Justice are preparing for the annual NRA convention in Louisville (May 18-21).  With the support of funding from the Shalom Fund, Sowers has hired an artist and smith who will melt rifles and handguns into useful pieces of metal.  The artist, Mike Martin of RAWtools, has been interviewed in the Huffington Post, Sojourners and many other publications.  Sisters and Associates are volunteering to distribute literature and are looking for rifles and guns to donate for the melting down event.  MOMS Demand Action have planned a comprehensive event on May 21st at Spalding University that will include a prayer vigil, memorial quilts, a film and panel of survivors.   Both events provide teachable moments with a focus on nonviolence.  Money and power in the halls of Congress and the halls of corporations have often muffled the sound of nonviolence.  However, the persistent and compelling sounds of nonviolence of MOMS, Sowers, Dominicans, peace activists, and artists will not be silenced during this convention or the days following.  If you cannot be with us, please join us in prayer.
