Sr. Helen Walter

Dominican Sister of Peace Helen Walter (97) died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH on August 27, 2016. She was born in 1918 in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1936 she entered the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the College of St. Mary of the Springs, now Ohio Dominican University, and a Master of Science in Administration from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA .

Sr. Helen taught elementary school for more than forty years. In Ohio she taught in Steubenville, Lancaster, Columbus, and Marietta and also served as principal at Holy Trinity in Somerset. She taught in Ossining, NY, and Gross Pointe, MI.  She also taught in Wilmerding, McKees Rocks, Braddock, East Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh, PA.

Sr. Helen is remembered as an excellent teacher and principal, one who set high standards and influenced many children. She had a wonderful laugh, a smile for everyone, and was always young at heart.

When she retired from teaching, she worked as an Assistant Dietitian and was a Congregational Volunteer at the Columbus Motherhouse. In 2007 she moved to Mohun Health Care Center to a ministry of prayer and presence.

Sr. Helen was preceded in death by her parents John and Katherine Holler Walter, her brothers Gerard and Paul, her sisters Beatrice Gaylord, Dorothy Pearlman, and Sr. Germaine (Mary Ronald) OSF.

A Vigil of Remembrance and the Mass of Christian Burial were held at the Columbus Motherhouse on September 1 and 2, 2016. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery.
