Dominican Sister of Peace Sister Madeleine Louise (Mary Gloria) McCune, 98, died on October 18, 2020, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky.
Born in 1922, Sister Madeleine was one of the three children of Louise Queriallo and Frank McCune.
Sister Madeleine entered the community in 1940, made first profession in 1942 and took her final vows in 1945. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies/Education from Siena College, Memphis, TN, in 1960.
Sister ministered as a teacher and Principal for nearly 60 years, serving in Chicago, Omaha and Hastings, NE, and her hometown of Memphis, TN. She took pride in her ministry as both a teacher and administrator, and once told the pastor at Saint Anne School in Memphis that “the ‘e’ at the end of St. Anne’s name stands for excellence.”
When she could no longer serve full time, Sister Madeleine continued to teach part time as a tutor at Madonna Learning Center, a learning facility for children and young adults with special needs and their families.
Beginning in 2012, Sister Madeleine began her ministry of prayer and presence at the Sansbury car Center in St. Catharine, KY.
The late Sr. Elaine DesRosiers, OP, in her preaching at Sr. Madeleine’s funeral, remembered her as a “gracious Southern Lady” who “left the light on for many people.” She remembers that Sr. Madeleine was especially welcoming and hospitable to the members of the Board of St. Agnes/St. Dominic when they visited Memphis for Board meetings.
Sister was preceded in death by one brother, Louis. She is survived by one brother Frank, six nieces and their many offspring.
A private funeral Mass was held on October 21, in Sansbury Care Center Chapel, St. Catharine, KY, with burial following in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
