Dominican Sister of Peace Anne (Kenneth Marie) Rutledge, OP, (86) died on January 14, 2021, at the Mohun Health Care Center in Columbus, OH.
One of five siblings, Sister Anne was born August 12, 1934, to Mary Burke and John Rutledge of Pittsburgh, PA. She worked in an office for a few years, but eventually followed in the footsteps of her sister, Sister Mary Rutledge, and entered the Congregation in 1957. She was a Religious Sister for 64 years,
Sr. Anne earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Saint Mary of the Springs College, now Ohio Dominican University, and her Master of Education from Duquesne University. She took advantage of additional educational opportunities at Ohio Wesleyan University, Dayton University, Kent State University, Boston College and Point Park College. She was always eager to strengthen her educational ministry.
Sr. Anne served as a teacher and administrator in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania for twenty years. She worked in the Education Office, Diocese of Steubenville and was Principal at St. Anthony’s in Steubenville, as well as at St. Clare de Montefalco in Grosse Pointe Park, MI and Our Lady of Peace, Columbus, Ohio.
Sr. Anne also served as the Librarian at Seton LaSalle High School in Pittsburgh and for fifteen years she worked in the Field Education and Placement Office at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. In all these roles, she felt privileged to have the opportunity to touch the lives of children through her ministry.
Sr. Anne was very committed to peace and justice issues and believed “each of us must, in our own way do what is possible for us to do.”
As is so often the case, after “retirement,” Sr. Anne entered a new ministry – she served her Congregation as Transportation Coordinator at the Mohun Health Care Center for three years before entering her final ministry of prayer and presence.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Mary Burke Rutledge, and her sisters Sister Mary Rutledge, OP and Margaret Joan Lachut, OP. She is survived by her brother, John (Jack); her sister, Virginia (Jean) O’Shea; and nieces and nephews.
Sr. Anne was interred in a private graveside service on January 21, 2021 at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Columbus, OH.
