Dominican Sister of Peace Dorothy Mattingly, OP, (92), a native of Akron, OH, died on December 30, 2020 at Rockynol Care Center, Akron, OH.
Born on May 14, 1928, Sr. Dorothy was one of the six children of Bernice Harris and William Mattingly. She entered the Congregation in 1948 and celebrated 70 years of consecrated religious life in 2020.
Sister Dorothy stayed in northeast Ohio to earn her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Education from Saint John College in Cleveland. Her love of study moved her to continue her education with courses in Science and Theology at Siena Heights College, in Clinical Pastoral Education at the Aquinas Institute of Theology and at the Center for Continuing Formation in Ministry at the University of Notre Dame.
As much as Sr. Dorothy loved to learn, she also loved to share what she had learned. She began her ministry as a teacher and principal in Akron, Wooster, and Youngstown, and shared her love of teaching by helping other educators as the Diocesan Supervisor for the Cleveland Diocese, Education Consultant for the Southern Region of the Diocese, and Regional Superintendent of the Youngstown Diocese for Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Sr. Dorothy also served as a Member of the Board at Our Lady of the Elms Schools in Akron and the Health Education Center. She was president of the International Reading Association.
Sr. Dorothy was active in service to her Dominican Community. She was elected as a Councilor for the Congregation and served as a member of the Community’s Education and Apostolic Commission. Her special ministry to her Sisters was the creation of a Retirement Success Program for the elderly Sisters.
After her own retirement, Sr. Dorothy continued to teach part-time at St. Mary School in Akron, OH, with the goal of teaching the children “to respect one another, to establish healthy self-esteem, and to recognize the good in each person regardless of race, etc.”
Sr. Dorothy Mattingly entered her final ministry of prayer and presence at the Akron Motherhouse in 2012.
Sister Dorothy is survived by brother, William; sister, Eileen Hagenbaugh and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Timothy; sisters, Dorothy Wade and Jean Albright.
Sr. Dorothy was interred in a private graveside service on January 7, 2021, at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron, OH. A memorial mass will be held at a date to be announced at The Dominican Sisters of Peace Akron Motherhouse Chapel.
