Dominican Sister of Peace Kevin (Mary Therese) Clavin, OP (83), died on April 20, 2022, at the Kansas University Med Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
One of eight children born to Mary Mulligan and James Clavin of Kilbeggan County Westmeath, Sr. Kevin heard God’s call in the form of a priest from Great Bend visiting Ireland. She followed that call across the sea, then across the country to Great Bend, where she entered the community in 1955 and took her final vows in 1964.
Sr. Kevin earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and Theology from Newman College in Kansas. She spent most of her 64 years of religious life in ministry as an educator, working in Kansas and Colorado. She also spent four years as a religious educator in Pueblo, CO.
In 1983, she moved to St. Columba School in Durango, CO, where she, along with Sr. Edith Marie, taught children for 27 years. The two taught their pupils to love and support the work of our missions, and the generations of students and families were devoted supporters of Hope for the Village Child.
From 2010 to 2021, Sr. Kevin volunteered at the Great Bend Motherhouse, including daily work in the finance office. She loved to help prepare for and work at the Annual Bazaar, decorate the dining room for special celebrations, and visit Sisters in the infirmary.
She was also devoted to her family and loved to visit Ireland to see her many grandnieces and nephews.
Sister Kevin was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Bro. James Clavin. She is survived by four brothers, Pat (Evelyn) Clavin, John (Susan) Clavin, Lian (Fidelma) Clavin, all of Ireland, and Rev. Oliver Clavin of Springfield, MO, and two sisters, Joan Young of Overland Park, KS, and Evelyn (Richard) Hefferan of Ireland, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as the Dominican Sisters of Peace.
A Vigil Service was held on April 28 and the Mass of Christian Burial on April 29, both at the Sisters’ Convent. Sr. Kevin is interred at the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery.
