Dominican Sister of Peace Maureen T. Cannon, OP

Dominican Sister of Peace Maureen T. Cannon, OP, (91), of Philadelphia, PA, died on June 11, 2024, at her residence in Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH.

Maureen Theresa was born to Florence Droughman and Bernard J. Cannon. A Dominican Sister for nearly 70 years, she entered the Congregation in 1952, made first profession in 1955, and took her final vows in 1958.

Sr. Maureen earned Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Albuquerque, NM, her Master of Arts in Psychology from the Catholic University of America, and her Master of Arts in Theology from the University of Dayton, OH.  Maureen dedicated over fifty years to ministry, serving as a Retreat House staff member, in various roles at parishes and Diocesan Offices, as a Campus Minister, and in prayer ministry at the Dominican Ashram. She also contributed to the Congregation as Director of Formation and Novice Director. Her roles took her across Florida, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Most recently, Maureen served in parish work in Florida, where she was cherished by parish members who continued to stay in touch with her after she moved to Mohun.

She utilized her academic knowledge throughout her life in various ministries, while also showcasing her creative and playful side by transforming into different "characters" for scripture classes or meticulously curating environments in the perfect hues.

In her funeral planning, Sr. Maureen did not shy away from her true colors. She wrote: “Please do not pray that I ‘rest in peace.’ I do not want to rest for all eternity. It must be more interesting than that!”

Sr. Lucy Vazquez, a Dominican Sister of Adrian, shared, “that Sr. Maureen was a force of nature. She was a woman with a strong ego, in the best sense of the word. A woman who owned her own dignity. She is sure that Jesus said to her, just like the Canaanite women, “woman, you have great faith.”

She was preceded in death by her parents Bernard and Florence and her brothers Bernard J. and Joseph Patrick Cannon. She is survived by her brother Paul, her sisters Florence Delaney and Toni Taylor and nieces and nephews.

A vigil of remembrance was held on June 28, 2024, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel, Columbus, OH. A funeral liturgy will follow on June 29, 2024. Burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA, will be at a later date.

Memorial gifts in Sister Maureen’s memory may be submitted securely online or sent to the Dominican Sisters of Peace, Office of Mission Advancement, 2320 Airport Dr, Columbus, OH 43219.
