Dominican Sister of Peace Mary Ruth Angelette, OP 

Dominican Sister of Peace Mary Ruth Angelette, OP, (87), a native of New Orleans, LA, died on September 9, 2024, in Metairie, LA. 
 
The youngest of five, Sr. Ruth was born to Ruth Rear and Joseph Angelette. A graduate of St. Mary’s Dominican High School, Ruth entered the community in 1955, made her first profession in 1957, and took her final vows in 1960. She would have celebrated her 65th Jubilee in 2025. 
 
Sr. Ruth earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from St. Mary's Dominican College and her master's in education from Marquette University.  
 
She taught in elementary schools for five years before becoming the founding Principal at Saint Clare School in Waveland. She ministered there for eight years and helped to rebuild after the school’s destruction by Hurricane Camille. For more than forty years, she ministered as a teacher, principal, Vice President of Mission and Vision, and Director of the Montessori Preschool, among other roles at Saint Anthony of Padua School in New Orleans, Louisiana. 
 
Sister Ruth's contributions were widely recognized within the Congregation. She served eight years as a Councilor and Personnel Director, followed by four years as Assistant to the Major Superior. 
 
In her letter to the Congregation, Sr. Pat Twohill recalled that when Sister Ruth requested Final Profession, she wrote, "I love my vocation and my community and will continue to pray for the grace to remain faithful to both." Her unwavering commitment and faithfulness were clear to everyone who knew her and those she served. 
 
Sr. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Joseph T. and Ruth Rear Angelette, her brothers Joseph H. and Edward P. along with her sisters Ruth A. Cernich and Helene A. Metzger. She is survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Nell Mechana along with many other close friends.

A Wake will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at St. Anthony of Padua Church at 4640 Canal St., New Orleans, LA. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 4:30 PM.  A private burial at the Dominican Sisters Cemetery at Rosaryville in Ponchatoula, LA will take place at a later date. Arrangements by Schoen and Son Funeral Home.
