Letters to the Editor from: St. Catharine Sisters

Like many of your readers, I am ashamed for our nation that the president of Ukraine was so badly disrespected in the Oval Office on Feb 28. Even worse, I am appalled  that the US government is now siding with Russia against the brave people who have resisted violent Russian aggression against their nation for the last three years.  Do our new leaders have any sense of honor about keeping sacred promises to our allies? I beg the citizens of Washington County to contact our Senators (Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul) and our Congressman (James Comer) to urge them to support continued military aid until a peace agreement fair to both sides can be reached.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I write to ask whether others in our county community are as dismayed as I am by the government’s sudden dismantling of the US Agency for International Development (USAID).  Much good has been accomplished across the world by this agency for decades:  food for starving children, seeds for farmers who can’t afford to buy them, clean water for disease-ridden families; medicine for rural people threatened by deadly diseases, and the list goes on…  All of these cost less than half of 1% of our annual federal budget.  Not only that, but American farmers are able to sell over $2 billion of their agricultural products annually for international humanitarian aid, and our kindness lets people know that US Americans care about them.

Please contact our Senators (Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul) and our Congressman (James Comer) to urge them to support the full restoration of USAID immediately.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wonder if the good-hearted people of Washington County understand what it means to say one is against DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion). When it comes right down to the facts, Anti-DEI amounts to the same thing as Pro White – Straight -  Male Supremacy. Anti-DEI means you don’t want to see women, people of color, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities have the same chance at good jobs or good education as white males have.  I repeat: not a better chance, but the same chance, at good opportunities.  Not only is that approach more fair; it also expands our national talent pool and will make us more successful in the global economy.  We’ll even have more fun when we work together with those who bring new perspectives.  When you hear people bad-mouthing DEI, please challenge them.  There is a lot at stake here for our future. Please contact our Senators (Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul) and our Congressman (James Comer) to urge them to support DEI in all ways possible.

  4. Thank you, sisters, for your eloquence and your graceful stands for truth. You have reminded me that whenever I have an opportunity to speak out on these issues, I must do so with as much understanding and compassion as I can find for people whose views differ from mine, however strongly I might disagree with them.
