Dear Editor,

I consider President Trump to be brilliant when it comes to the “Art of the Deal.” He has an outstanding expertise in transactions. What worries me is his corresponding lack of relationality. He models that relationship is unimportant. Taking advantage of other nations, threatening them, and degrading them is now our nation’s strongest strategy. Where is relationship in this?
The “left” is shocked at his rhetoric, pushing forcefully against it; the “right” has adopted his rhetoric, pushing it forward. When other nations have tried to engage him in dialogue, he simply repeats what he wants as if he already has it.
I object to the President’s approach to international politics by commenting on his behavior towards Greenland. Yes, Greenland has strategic minerals we, the United States, need for our national security; no, that does not give us the right to threaten Denmark, another sovereign nation, for its territory, Greenland. Where is the sense of relationship between our two countries?
Mr. Trump’s behavior is consistent with the way he has approached Panama and Canada. What is profoundly lacking is any sense of relationship. How can this lead to the peace he cites as his most treasured goal? Is it not rather a strategy for domination?
Respectfully,

Fantastic, Pat!
Thanks,

Relationship requires a sense of being with another–community? We the people need a revival –can we of our religious communities be an encouraging spirit?
Well done, Pat. Thanks so much for putting into eloquent words what we all are thinking.
Blessings and continued prayers!
Great points, Pat. We must advocate for a rational and balanced relationship approach in all our political debates. Thank you.
Good points, Sr. Pat! So inspiring that people started a dialogue.
Well done, Pat! Thank you for articulating what so many feel
Thank you, Pat, for articulating that we are created for relationship with God, our neighbor and ourselves.
I hope and pray that President Trump will take your words to his heart and soul. I continue to pray that he will be the Man of Peace in our world.
Thank you all for your encouragement. You may be surprised to know this is the first letter I’ve ever written an editor and I don’t think it will be my last!
I am also grateful to my sisters in Kentucky to whom I showed the letter before it was sent. Together we can make a difference. Might you have a letter in you for your hometown newspaper?
Sister Pat,
I couldn’t agree more. Every strategy Trump uses does not promote respect, compassion or care for the marginalized.
Thanks for speaking out.
Patti
