Dominican Sister of Peace, Doris Regan died January 14, 2026, at Mohun Health Care Center in Columbus, Ohio. She was born in 1936 in Plainfield, New Jersey and entered the Congregation of St. Mary of the Springs, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace, in 1956 and made her profession two years later.
She taught in high schools in Ohio and served as principal in West Hartford, Connecticut. In addition to her educational ministry, she served the poor as a missionary for more than 25 years in Bolivia, Peru, and Honduras. Sr. Doris authored a book about serving as a missionary, “For Those with a Journey to Make,” and dedicated it to the Dominican Sisters of Peace, the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic and the people of Bolivia, Peru, and Honduras.
The reflection was given by Sr. Joan Williams, OP, who met Sr. Doris in 1998 and ministered with her for more than two decades. Sr. Joan remembered how Doris loved the story of the potter in Jeremiah.
“She gave a retreat to the Dominican Laity in Honduras about her own experience of forming a vessel out of clay,” Sr. Joan said. “She learned all the Spanish vocabulary to tell the detailed process from the beginning to the end. It seemed that she was telling her own story of being in the hands of the potter, being shaped and reshaped until the potter was pleased.”
Sr. Doris said this about her time at a small school in Honduras, “The little school in the Housing Project was named St. Martin de Porres, and I think Martin would like that. The little ones in the school were very much like Martin, very poor, very trusting, and very generous. But they were very much in need of adults to care for them.”
Sr. Doris earned her Bachelor of Arts in Latin and History from St. Mary of the Springs College, now Ohio Dominican University, and her Master of Arts in Classics from the Catholic University of America. She also obtained certificates in spiritual direction, administration, and Clinical Pastoral Education.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Michael, and Mary Catherine Cella Regan, her brother Reverend Richard Regan, SJ, and her sister Joan Sheridan. She is survived by nieces and nephews.
A Vigil of Remembrance Service was held January 28, 2026, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel.
Her funeral liturgy was held at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel at 9:30 AM on January 29, 2026, followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery.
