Dominican Sister of Peace Monica Myers, OP, (98), born in Estherwood, LA, died on February 13 at the Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, KY.
Born Claudia Anna to Donatile Sonnier and Olide Myers, Sr. Monica made her Perpetual Profession of Vows with the Eucharistic Missionaries of St. Dominic, New Orleans, in 1949. She lived her Dominican vocation for 76 years.
Sr. Monica earned certification in religious education and later became certified in Reiki and foot reflexology, embracing a holistic healing ministry grounded in her deep faith that Jesus is the true Healer. Through gentle presence, compassionate touch, and a focus on wellness and prevention, she ministered especially among those who were poor or had limited access to medical care. She often spoke of her call to “let God work through me,” believing that what we have and what we are, are meant for others.
Her ministry as a catechist, seamstress, and pastoral presence took her to many communities throughout Louisiana. For nearly 25 years, she provided reflexology and Reiki, offering comfort and care to those she served. In her later years at Sansbury Care Center, she continued her ministry through prayer and presence.
In the funeral reflection, Sr. Dot Trosclair described her life of service: “Her ministry carried her beyond church walls to bayous, farms, streets, and homes, where she served as catechist, visitor, and compassionate listener.”
Grateful for her Dominican vocation, Sr. Monica found in her ministry a path that continually drew her closer to God.
Sr. Monica was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by siblings, Phil Myers and Marjorie (Myers) Broussard.
A vigil service with the sharing of memories was held on Wednesday, February 25, followed by the Mass of Resurrection on Thursday, February 26. All services took place in the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. Burial will take place at a later date in Estherwood, Louisiana.
