Dominican Sister of Peace Betty Doskey, (96), a native of New Orleans, LA, died on July 22, 2026, at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH.
Sr. Betty, the oldest of six, was born to Elsie Zollinger and Camile Doskey, Jr. Betty entered the congregation in 1946 and took her final vows in 1951. She served God's people faithfully for 78 years.
Sr. Betty earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Saint Mary's Dominican College, New Orleans, LA; Master of Science and Math from the University of Wisconsin; and a PhD in Chemistry/Physics from the University of Notre Dame.
After teaching in elementary and high schools for seventeen years, she served at Dominican College from 1960 to 1984. She later taught and conducted environmental research in Ohio before accepting a position teaching physical science in Louisiana in 2007. Sr. Pat Twohill recalled, "One of Betty's favorite ministries was serving as a science consultant in Catholic elementary schools, where she shared not only her knowledge but also her deep love of science."
At her funeral, Sr. Therese Leckert reflected on Betty's deep trust in God, recalling her words during her founding congregation's Extraordinary Chapter as the sisters discerned joining the Union. In a moment of uncertainty following the vote, Betty reminded the congregation that the Chapter, as its highest authority, had spoken and that they were called to trust the decision and move forward in faith. For Sr. Therese, Betty's words became a lasting witness to her confidence that God's Spirit was guiding the congregation into its future.
Sr. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Elsie D. McCarthy, and brothers Rev. Msgr. Clinton Doskey, James and David Doskey. She is survived by her brother, Richard.
A Vigil of Remembrance was held on July 24, 2026, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel in Columbus, Ohio. The funeral liturgy was celebrated there on July 25, with burial to take place later at Rosaryville in Ponchatoula, LA.
