A Roamin’ Catholic Reflects on Itinerancy

Blog by Sr. June Fitzgerald, OP

This week our Ministry of Welcome – Vocations and Formation teams are meeting to review our year and to plan for the future.  We’re taking time out from our usual schedule to step back and take a long loving look at where God is calling us to focus our time, energy, and enthusiasm.

As we do this, I am also preparing to move to Connecticut in a few weeks.  I’ll be reopening our Vocation office in New Haven and becoming a member of our House of Welcome community.

This requires me once again to embrace the reality of the itinerant nature of my life and my commitment.

Making Peace, One Letter at a Time

Blog by Sr. Barbara Kane, OP
Blog by Sr. Barbara Kane, OP

We just celebrated the feast of a great Dominican saint, Catherine of Siena. She imitated Christ in her many ministries to the poor, sick and dying. She also saw how Jesus advocated for the poor and vulnerable in his resistance to the “powers that be” standing up to the Pharisees, scribes, and priests who contributed to the structural evil that so oppressed the people.

Jesus was never afraid to speak truth to power and neither was Catherine. Her commitment for peace and justice often came in the form of letters. In the Dialog, Catherine hears Jesus say “the soul speaks…proclaiming the doctrine of my truth, in admonishing, advising, giving witness without fear of any harm…boldly proclaiming it to everyone in different ways.” She took this seriously which her letters reflect.

Peace Among Friends

This January I had the great privilege of being a guest at Tashi Kyil Monastic Institute outside of Dehradun, India. I have been interested in Buddhist teaching and practice for a couple of decades. However, outside of books by Chogyam Trungpa and the Dalai Lama, I had had little contact with the Tibetans. My experience at Tashi Kyil was a deeply moving lesson in sincerity and hospitality. This was not a place where strange and exotic yogic practices were undertaken. Their teachings and practices were simple and profound. They were centered in the heart. They were based on two principles: loving-kindness and non-attachment. It was interesting how these work together. From one perspective they may seem mutually exclusive. However, as I would experience firsthand, the presence of guests provides a precious opportunity to bring these two values into a kind of seamless expression. Continue reading →

Reflecting on Friendship

Associate Tara Tuttle, OPA

Newly committed Associate of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, Tara Tuttle shares her reflection from the day’s ceremony:

In John 15:12-17, Christ uses the word “friends” three times and applies it to those who follow Him as He commands us to love each other. “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants [. . .] but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. [. . .] These things I command you, that ye love one another.” Continue reading →
