What are you passing to the next generation?

From Generation to Generation

I recently had the opportunity to participate in the baptism of one of my great-nephews, Samuel. His parents, godparents, and big sister, Lucy, plus other family members and the parish community all applauded and sang as little Sam was presented to the community. In that moment I felt very grateful and proud, first of my nephew and his wife who are sharing their faith in the God of love with their children, and then of our Church community who for millennia has passed the belief in Jesus Christ from one generation to the next. We, as Church, struggle in each generation to live the Gospel, doing better at some points than others, but always ready to work through challenges and heartaches of the people in our families and in our world. Continue reading →

“Love” – Validating this radical lifestyle

Many years ago, the thought about religious life came to me quite indirectly. The thought was not in reference to myself, but was in the spirit of idle curiosity (or so I thought at the time). I remember sitting alone in the back of the church (I’m not sure what I was praying about at the time), when the pastor came through, happily going about some task on the altar and oblivious to the fact that he was being observed. I remember being curious and internally voicing the question, “What would cause someone to choose such a radical lifestyle?” God would help me to answer that question later in life. The answer is Love. Love is both the “who” and the “what” that validates this radical lifestyle, for Scripture, indeed, tells us that “God is Love” ~ 1 John 4:8. Continue reading →

Prayer – A sacred task that we can share

Frequently, in the course of speaking with discerners, friends, family and Associates, I hear, “Sister, please pray for….” They know I am a person of faith and so they reach out and ask me to join them in prayer. Usually I ask for more information about the prayer request or the person/situation involved. Listening to their stories invites me to enter into their lives and the lives of those involved. Praying for and with others is one of the most sacred tasks we can do for each other. That is, to bring this person or situation before God in prayer and petition.

For whom and what are you praying this day?

Take a few moments to reflect on those intentions and to lift them up to God. Continue reading →

Harvesting: An Encounter with God

The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few…

Three years ago, I went to a mystic retreat in France and stayed in a convent where a hundred acres of wheat fields grew in the back. The scene there was so beautiful that I was attracted to walk it and to stay there for meditation every day during that retreat. Continue reading →

Endings and Beginnings

What personal rituals do you have for the ending and the beginning of a new year? Do you throw things out which you are no longer using, or begin new projects or new resolutions with the start of a new year? Is this time of year just like every other time of year for you?

One of the practices that I have retained from my novitiate experience is taking time for a reflection day, looking back over the past year and looking ahead to hopes and dreams I have. I find it helpful to ponder where I’ve been, where I gave my energy during the past year, and where I hope to grow, especially in regard to my relationships with others. Continue reading →
