One of the responsibilities of the Associates Council and Co-Directors is to stay in touch with the various geographic groups of Associates throughout the country and beyond through phone calls, e-mails and personal visits. I must say I personally look forward to both travelling and visiting with our Dominican Associates. Each time I come away grateful to be a witness to the Holy Spirit’s work among us in what I like to call the Associates Movement.

This past week I visited two groups – 1) the Sisters and Associates gathered in Great Bend for their Discernment Retreat – designed especially for Candidates (persons studying and discerning a call to make a two year commitment as an Associate with the Dominican Sisters of Peace) and 2) the Sisters and Associates gathered in Denver to reflect together on St. Dominic’s nine ways of praying – a part of their ongoing study together with two Candidates discerning their call to Associates Life.

Is It Time for a Just Peace Approach?

“In every age, the Holy Spirit graces the Church with the wisdom to respond to the challenges of its time. In response to what is a global epidemic of violence, which Pope Francis has labeled a ‘world war in installments,’ we are being called to invoke, pray over, teach and take decisive action. Surprise!

Yesterday in celebrating the Feast of the Ascension, I was surprised and inspired by the reading from Ephesians 1:17-23, so I spent time pondering it, especially these words:

“May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened,
that you may know what is the hope that belongs to God’s call,
what are the riches of glory in our inheritance among the holy ones,
and what is the surpassing greatness of Christ’s power for us who believe.” Continue reading →

Reflecting on Friendship

Associate Tara Tuttle, OPA
Associate Tara Tuttle, OPA

Newly committed Associate of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, Tara Tuttle shares her reflection from the day’s ceremony:

In John 15:12-17, Christ uses the word “friends” three times and applies it to those who follow Him as He commands us to love each other. “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants [. . .] but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. [. . .] These things I command you, that ye love one another.” Continue reading →

Behind the Wire at Ohio Reformatory for Women

Blog by Associate Shelby Fleck
Blog by Associate Shelby Fleck, OPA

On April 14, I went behind the razor wire at the Ohio Reformatory for Women to be the hands and feet of Christ…and to deliver 4,000 dozen cookies. It’s a big task but one that God makes possible twice a year in prisons across the country with faithful servants and outstanding community support. I’m sure the Kairos Prison ministry is one of many that bring Christ to the incarcerated, but since it’s my experience, I will share that. Continue reading →
