Sr. Dorothy Margaret Dawes, OP

Dawes-DorothyDominican Sisters of Peace Dorothy Margaret Dawes, OP (85), died on January 23, 2016, at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center (New Orleans, LA). Born August 29, 1930, in Chenal, LA, she was the daughter of Richard and Addie Marie (McKay) Dawes.

In 1948 she entered the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary’s, New Orleans, (now the Dominican Sisters of Peace). Sr. Dorothy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from St. Mary’s Dominican College (New Orleans, LA) and a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry/ Biology from Institutum Divi Thomae (Cincinnati, OH). She also earned a Master of Arts degree in Biblical Language and Literature from St. Louis University (St. Louis, MO). Known as a master teacher, she taught at St. Mary’s Dominican High School and St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans. Later she served as adjunct professor and campus minister in Hammond, Lafayette and Thibodaux, LA, and Orlando, FL. She also served as vocation minister, archivist and historian for her congregation. Continue reading →

Sr. M. Francine Stalter, OP

Stalter-M.FrancineDominican Sister of Peace M. Francine Stalter, OP (92), died on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at Summa Medical Center in Akron, OH.

She was born on June 27, 1923, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Stalter. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron, OH, (now Dominican Sisters of Peace) in 1946 and professed her first vows in 1948. Sr. Francine earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from St. John College (Cleveland, OH) in 1958 and a Master of Science degree in Library Science from Case Western Reserve University, (Cleveland, OH) in 1978. Continue reading →

Sister Jean Vianney Norris, OP

Dominican Sister of Peace Jean Vianney Norris, OP (89), died on December 27, 2015, at Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY). She was born in 1926 in Jamaica, NY, to parents Bartholomew and Letitia (Cogin) Norris. She entered the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine (now the Dominican Sisters of Peace) and made her first profession of vows in 1946. Continue reading →

Sr. Catherine Platt, OP

Platt-CatherineDominican Sister of Peace Catherine Platt, OP, died at Mount Carmel East Hospital (Columbus, OH) on Wednesday, November 18, 2015. She was born in 1951 in Philadelphia, PA. In 1979 she entered the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine de’ Ricci, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace. She made her first profession of vows in 1982. Sr. Marie Hohman, OP

Hohman-MarieDominican Sister of Peace Marie Hohman, OP, died in hospice care at Akron General Medical Center on Wednesday, November 11, 2015.

Sr. Marie was born in Akron, OH, on February 1, 1925, the only daughter and eldest child of Albert and Margaret Hohman. She graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1943 and entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace, that same year.
