Living Our Dominican Values and Pillars at Albertus Magnus College

Blog by Sister Cathy Buchanan, OP

Prayer, Study, Community, and Service are the Dominican Pillars that our students and I live by every day here at Albertus Magnus College! I love living out our Dominican pillars in my ministry and in my community life. It’s like living my best Dominican life! I am surrounded by our Dominican pillars every day. I see campus ministry as an opportunity to connect with future generations of Dominicans. I spend time talking with our Albertus students about the Dominican values and traditions that can be easily incorporated into their lives.

When we speak about PRAYER, we discuss Meister Eckhart’s quote, “If the only prayer you ever pray is, 'thank you,' it will be enough. Students start to embrace the idea of prayer as an attitude of gratitude, which is bigger than formal prayer. Another experience students embrace is praying in nature, which helps them see and experience the grandeur of God’s creation! Students are very connected to the Divine through nature.

Our students embrace STUDY as the beginning of lifelong learning, a very Dominican reality. They understand the need to bring their Dominican education into the world to help make it a more peaceful place—not just learning for learning’s sake but giving back to the wider world.

A welcoming COMMUNITY is very much the culture here at Albertus. Our students are entrusted with living out our Catholic Social Teaching, which says that each person is valued for the uniqueness that God created them to be. Because Albertus is New England's most diverse Catholic college, students can learn from, interact with, and value each person’s dignity. All of us are enriched by the diversity that brings us into community with each other.

Lastly, SERVICE is a strong pillar here at Albertus! Our students commit to engaging in service while they are here. Our annual “Day of Service” is where our community comes together to make a difference in the wider New Haven area. We partner with 24 different service organizations in the New Haven area, and many of our students volunteer, participate in internships, and eventually work for local non-profits in the area.

Promoting our Dominican values and pillars to past, present, and future students is a rewarding and fulfilling experience for me as the college’s Campus Minister. Helping students to inculcate these values of prayer, study, community, and service into who they are and how they will contribute to the world fills me with joy!

If you want to learn more about our Dominican values and pillars, or if you feel God is calling you to religious life as a Sister, join us for these events:

  • July 19, 2025 -- a special virtual day of prayer where we will come together to “Sit at the Well of Jesus.”
  • September 12-14, 2025 – an in-person opportunity to explore what it means to be pilgrims of hope as we step out in faith to hear how God calls us and what it means to follow Jesus as a religious sister with the Dominican Sisters of Peace.
