40. sisters in the yardCHIMBOTE, Perú – On July 27, 1966, four Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs (now Dominican Sisters of Peace) boarded a cargo ship in New York City for the 15-day journey to the Pacific coast of Perú. Srs. Kateri McCaffrey, Catherine Allen, Edwina Devlin and Dorothy Lemon arrived at the port of Salaverry, about an hour north of Chimbote, where they were welcomed by the Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph and transported to Chimbote. In  all the richness of these after-Easter scriptures – the bold witness of Paul, the growth of new Christian communities, the poignancy of Paul’s departure and his words of encouragement to those he is leaving, and in the wonderful circuitous word-play that the Gospel of John presents to us in the last discourses of Jesus (chapters 14-17) heard again and new throughout this late Easter Season, there appears a tiny part of speech, a little word which occurs repeatedly in the farewell prayers of Jesus and in the letters of Paul—It is the word IN. Continue reading →

Peace Encountering Power

One of the most enjoyable events of Derby Week is the Pegasus Parade, and again this year I joined thousands who watched the colorful costumes, balloons and marching bands.  Mid way into the parade, “Breaking News” flashed on the screen the announcement that two 15 year-olds had shot two other teenagers near the parade route.  This event seems to be the “new normal” in Louisville and around the country.  Incidents of gun violence and deaths are increasing rapidly this year.

Surprise!

Yesterday in celebrating the Feast of the Ascension, I was surprised and inspired by the reading from Ephesians 1:17-23, so I spent time pondering it, especially these words:

what are the riches of glory in our inheritance among the holy ones,
