Dominican Sister of Peace Sister Bernadine Egleston

Dominican Sister of Peace Bernadine Marie (Helen Frances) Egleston, OP (83), a native of Waltham, Massachusetts, died on December 2, 2020, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky.

Sister Bernadine was one of three children born to Mary Knight and Timothy Egleston in Waltham, MA. She attended Dominican schools in Massachusetts for 12 years, and felt ready, after graduation, to join the women who had taught her so well. She entered the Congregation in 1955.

God gifted our dear Bern with artistic talent, and she educated herself to honor that gift. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and Art from Regis College, her Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture from Providence College, and both a Master of Arts in Art and a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Dallas.

Sister Bernadine ministered as a teacher for more than 20 years, sharing her love of God and of art with students in Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. She also served in Campus Ministry at Providence College in Rhode Island before devoting herself to art full time.

Bern availed herself of many media in her artistic work, including clay from Cartwright Creek on the grounds of the St. Catharine Motherhouse. Her work was displayed in galleries and at exhibitions, as well as used as illustrations for congregational events.

Magdalen Chapel, St, Catharine, KY,

One work of particular significance to the Congregation was Sr. Bernadine’s renovation of St. Catharine’s Magdalen Hall to Magdalen Chapel. Her sculptures throughout the space have provided a place of serenity and sanctity for our Sisters who worship there.

Bern entered a ministry of prayer and presence at the Sansbury Care Center in 2015. Those who lived with her there were blessed by her laughter and her gift of seeing and sharing the beauty that she saw around her.

Sr. Bernadine is survived by one brother, William Egleston, and several nieces.

Sr. Bernadine was buried in a private ceremony at the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery on Thursday, December 10, 2020.  A memorial mass will be held at a date yet to be announced at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, KY.
