Of Retreats and Pilgrimages…

If I could apply a theme song to my retreat/pilgrimage this year, it would be “Lord of Glory” by Tim Manion which begins, “Leaping the mountains, bounding the hills….” Indeed, I lept mountains of luggage, ran for buses, scrutinized train schedules, and wondered if I would ever make it to the Rhineland Mystics Retreat I was to attend in the Ascasian region of Western France. Continue reading →

Why Would Anyone Profess Religious Vows Today?

Pat Dual
Blog by Sr. Pat Dual, OP

Saturday, July 11, 2015 was a wonderful day for the family of the Dominican Sisters of Peace! Not only was it the first beautiful sunny day in almost a week of clouds and rain, it was the day of the First Profession of Vows for Sr. Beata Tiboldi, into the congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Sr. Bea professed the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience for the next three years, promising to live faithfully her call to religious life as a Dominican sister. Many of her Dominican sisters and Associates, family and friends were on hand to witness and celebrate this wonderful event. And what a celebration! The Mass was beautiful and was a wonderful reflection of the culture and personality of Sr. Bea, who also gifted us with a beautiful preaching about why someone would want to profess religious vows in today’s culture.

The Mass of First Profession is such an inspiring event, and as a vocation minister, it is gratifying to be able to share this special occasion with others who are discerning a possible religious vocation. I was grateful to be able to invite other discerning women to participate in the festivities and they shared what a blessing it was to be part of the celebration. Sr. Bea’s preaching was so insightful about the call to religious life, and in particular, the call to Dominican life. Her words shared thoughts and ideas that could be very helpful to others who feel that God may be calling them to consider religious life. And so, with Sr. Bea’s permission, I would like to share with you her preaching from the Mass (click here) and some wonderful photos from the celebration of her First Profession (click here).

What Anniversaries Do You Celebrate/Honor?

Catherine Arnold, OP
Blog by Sr. Cathy Arnold, OP

Ten years ago today, I celebrated with my community, family, and friends my perpetual profession of vows as a Dominican Sister. I found out that day that many of my Dominican Sisters also celebrated anniversaries of profession on July 9 so it became even more special to me as I pondered all the Dominican women on whose shoulders I stood. In addition, today is the 49th anniversary of my Dad’s death, so the day has always been very significant to my family. This week we have also celebrated the lives of Srs. Aniceta Pitstick (Columbus, OH), Theresina Greenwell (St. Catharine, KY), and Siena Ward (Akron, OH) who have completed their lives on this earth and have now joined the saints in heaven.

beachocolateTwo days from now our congregation – Dominican Sisters of Peace: Sisters and Associates in Mission – will affirm and celebrate the first profession of vows of our novice, Sr. Bea Tiboldi. Most of the preparations – interiorly and exteriorly – are ready as Bea and we look forward to another woman joining the long line of followers of Christ in the tradition of Dominic de Guzman.

As Dominicans, we are in the midst of a ten year celebration (2006-2016) of the 800th anniversary of the Order, so it is especially exciting to witness Bea walk her journey in the footsteps of Dominic and Catherine of Siena and the multitudes of Dominican women and men who have come before her. May she and all of us follow closely the last words attributed to Dominic, “Have charity for one another, guard humility, make your treasure out of voluntary poverty.” Congratulations, Sister Bea!

What anniversaries do you celebrate or honor? Whether anniversaries of joy or sorrow may you know the loving presence of Christ in all the events of your life. Peace.

Does being Dominican tell the truth about who I am?

Catherine Arnold, OP
Blog by Sr. Cathy Arnold, OP

As Sr. Mary Lou Edwards posed this question (which she borrowed from Fr. R.B. Williams, OP) during her reflection this morning, she also added, “not who I was in the past, but who I am now?” My mind was off and running – How does being Dominican invite me, challenge me, call me to be fully who I am today? Does it make a difference that I am Dominican? – I thought to myself and does it speak to the truth of who I am? Continue reading →

“Wake Up The World!” Pope Francis’ Global Clarion Call For Change

Pat Dual
Blog by Sr. Pat Dual, OP

The month of June is filled with commencement speeches designed to inspire and motivate graduates to fulfill their destiny and change the world.  Recently, I attended the 2015 Ohio Dominican University graduation where Commencement speaker, Ohio Governor, John Kaisch, continued this tradition of encouraging our newest graduates to be agents of change in the world. In his remarks to this diverse and hope-filled group he stated:  “What really matters in this world is doing whatever we can, providing whatever healing we can, to make the world a better place.  The job of each and every one of us is to lift and change the world.” And he is right.  Each of us, in our own way, is called to help bring about positive change – or in the words of Pope Francis, to help “wake up the world.” Continue reading →
