Flu – 1, Me – 0

Over this past week, the three of us in our house have fallen, one by one, into the clutches of the stomach flu, some version of the norovirus. As you well know, this is an extremely scrappy little virus, just burgeoning with life, desperately eager to replicate itself and to spread itself, happily leaving in its wake groaning people in pitiable collapse, unable despite all the cautionary and rigorous efforts  to spray and wash and isolate and sterilize, to keep it at bay. So on it goes, romping and jack-hammering its way merrily through the hapless humanity it lives to make miserable, even if only for a day or so. Continue reading →

“Do not be afraid”

There is a low grade anxiety in me these days as we get closer to the new political era that is about to begin. Inauguration Day is making me feel like a dark cloud is on the horizon. Do you feel it too? Scripture says so often, “do not be afraid.” But I am worried.

I fear for the undocumented person, those who depend on the Affordable Care Act that will soon be gutted, and I fear for other people who are depending on this new administration to create something better for them. I suspect a great disappointment is coming. Continue reading →

Even Though…

Every year I write a Christmas letter – though it rarely gets out before the new year – and this year while recounting the year’s adventures, I had this thought: how many of us put an “even though,” at least in our musings if not the actual text, as we reflect on what the last year has brought? “Even though… I lost a brother-in-law …finances are tight …I’ve been overwhelmed by work …my arthritis has been acting up and slowing me down …I’m so upset by the terror and turmoil in the world …I find myself fearful and doubtful….” Continue reading →

It’s the beginning of a new year and a chance to make new New Year’s resolutions. I always like to look over the past year and see how I might do things differently. Of course, I need to eat fewer calories and walk more steps… spend less time watching NCIS (or Pure Genius, Code Black, etc!) and more time learning Spanish. Continue reading →
